We take sustainability to heart at the Campus Center. We are working toward a better world for everyone by evaluating our operations with a greener future in mind. For more information on Universitywide sustainability initiatives, please visit the Office of Sustainability.
Sustainability
Reduced Energy Usage
Since 2017, we have reduced our energy use by 15 percent resulting in over $75,000 in annual savings. This initiative was accomplished through turning off lights when the building is closed and reducing the HVAC load when specific areas of the building are not in use for extended periods of time.
In 2020, we anticipate over $10,000 in annual savings from installing LED light bulbs in the following areas: first floor, second floor, fifth floor, and Pratt Gym.
Niagra Earth Low Flow Showerhead
Our Niagra Earth Low Flow Showerhead saves URecFit up to 30 percent on energy and water. With the new showerheads, we save about 5,000 gallons of water per day.
Bottle-Filling Stations
Bottle-filling stations are located at all water fountains throughout the building. URecFit uses Elkay water bottle-filling stations, which reduces our dependency on disposable plastic water bottles.
Paperless Processes
URecFit and Wellness has many paperless processes, including memberships, intramural sports, and group exercise registration. UMB Student Affairs has paperless registration for all of its programs through The Elm or UMBengaged.
Upcycling
URecFit upcycles old towels to facilities and maintenance shops on campus for them to use as rags.
Before the new Student Counseling Center and Campus Life Services suite renovation project began, we repurposed 87 pieces of furniture and hardware to other departments on campus.
Composting
In September 2019, we are implementing a food composting program. The program will collect food from CulinArt's kitchens, and back-of-the-house areas, where the majority of our food waste occurs. The food will be turned into organic matter used by local farmers for their crops. Check back for details on how many pounds a month we are composting.
