Core Values Implementation Steering Committee
In the November 2021 President's Message, Dr. Bruce E Jarrell, MD, FACS wrote:
Throughout our history, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has worked to improve the human condition and serve the public good of Maryland and society at-large. We meet that mission through education, research, clinical care, and service. It takes our individual and collective actions to get there.
When we look at how to move UMB forward, one thing is very clear: Our values matter. Through our strategic planning process in 2011, UMB identified seven values core to our institution. Core values help define and shape culture at an organization — and just like UMB has evolved from our founding, our core values need to evolve as well.
Values live in the present. The 2022-2026 strategic planning process included an in-depth look at the existing core values and solicited and received feedback from the entire UMB community. The overwhelming response was that our existing values should be updated.
The core values of Accountability, Civility, Diversity, Excellence, Knowledge, and Collaboration evolved into the current four core value sets of Respect and Integrity, Well-Being and Sustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation and Discovery.
In 2022, a committee was established to facilitate the implementation of these new core values.
The Committee’s Charge
- Develop and implement a clearly articulated group of behavioral expectations related to each core value set, to which faculty, staff, students, and UMB leaders are held accountable.
- Provide guidance to schools and units on quantitative and qualitative data that could be used to provide transparent metrics that demonstrate and document the University community’s efforts at aligning behavior with the expectations inherent in our core values.
- Provide tools and options so that each school and administrative unit operationalizes the core values to encompass talent management, employee development and empowerment, and enhancements to student learning and experiences.
- Ensure that leaders, broadly defined, in each school and unit understand the importance of their demonstrated core values-related behaviors.
