Extended Appointment Hours

The Student Counseling Center offers early morning and evening appointments to accommodate the differing schedules of UMB students. After an initial appointment, 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. counseling appointments are available. Students should ask their clinician about these appointment times.

How to Intervene

Determine if the student is experiencing distress, a crisis, or an emergency.

If you are not sure of the severity, Request a Consultation to speak with a Student Counseling Center (SCC) clinician or call the SCC at (410) 328-8404 and consult regarding the concerns.

 

  • Distress:

    Feeling unusually emotional, hopeless about future, not showing up to class, withdrawn, behaving differently

    Intervention:

    Listen to and validate the student.

     

    AND

     

    Encourage student to call SCC

  • Crisis:

    Thoughts of suicide or of hurting someone else, suicide attempt in the last 30 days, self-injury, bizarre thoughts or behavior, agitated / unable to calm down

    Intervention:

    Call the Student Counseling Center or if after business hours, call the After Hours Crisis Support Service (410-328-8404, option 7)

  • Emergency:

    These are life threatening!

    Plans to seriously injure themselves or someone else (stated or implied), behavior that suggests they cannot keep themselves safe, attempted suicide in the last 24 hours, very disorganized speech or seems unable to determine reality

Learn to Support Someone Struggling with their Mental Health

Be There Certificate: The Be There Certificate is a free, digital, self-paced learning experience designed to increase mental health literacy and provide youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to safely support anyone who may be struggling with their mental health. The Be There Certificate is available in English, French and Spanish, offering universal best practices while diving deeper into the intersections of culture, identity, and social determinants of mental wellness. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA): Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a skills-based training course that teaches participants how to safely and responsibly identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness, substance use disorders and someone experiencing a crisis.  MHFA teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well. Training content and instructor certification provided by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

After Hours Crisis Intervention:

During business hours (Monday – Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm), we encourage you to reach out to the SCC regarding any mental health concerns about yourself or others (410-328-8404). After regular business hours, on weekends and holidays, you may call the After Hours Crisis Support Service (410-328-8404, press option 7) to speak with a counselor concerning yourself or others.
