What is UMB Alerts?

UMB Alerts is the system used by the Emergency Management Team at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to notify the University community about emergencies and weather-related closings.

UMB Alerts messages are sent out via campus phones and campus email accounts. Users also can register personal devices such as cellphones or pagers that are capable of receiving text messages. 

We make every effort to send emergency notifications with speed and accuracy. However, it may take several minutes before you receive a UMB Alert about an emergency on campus. In the event of an emergency on campus, do not delay; use your emergency training and knowledge to take immediate action.

Quiet hours

Silencing UMB Alerts can prevent you from receiving life-saving information. If you set "quiet hours" on your UMB Alerts profile and an alert is sent during those hours, you will not receive the alert once your quiet hours are over. We do not recommend that you use this feature.

Set up break-through alerts

Make sure you receive emergency alerts even when your phone notifications are silenced. These life-saving UMB Alerts are only sent during emergencies and weather-related closings.

  • iPhones: Open Contacts. Select the UMB Alerts contact and tap Edit. Tap Ringtone or Text Tone and turn on Emergency Bypass.
  • Android: Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb. Under “Allowed during Do Not Disturb,” choose “Calls and Messages” and then "add UMB Alerts contact" as an exception.

UMB Alerts are available to the entire campus community.

  • UMB FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS

    Manage your account settings.

    Make sure your information is up-to-date and add your cellphone to receive alerts via text message today.

    All UMB faculty, staff, and students are automatically enrolled in alerts to their campus email addresses and campus phone numbers.

    To receive alerts on your personal device(s), you must update your account information.

    You can opt out of receiving alerts on your personal device. However, if you do so, you accept a substantial delay in the delivery of critical safety information.

  • GUESTS, VISITORS, UMMC, VAMC, BIOPARK, FPI EMPLOYEES, AND UMB TENANTS

    Log-in or register a new account.

    Use the link above to access your existing account or register for a new account.

  • UMB AFFILIATES WITH *UMID

    Manage your account settings.

    Make sure your information is up-to-date and add your cellphone to receive alerts via text message today.

    As a UMB affiliate, you are automatically enrolled in alerts to your UMB email address and campus phone number.

    To receive UMB Alerts on your personal device(s), you must update your account information.

    Your affiliate enrollment in UMB Alerts expires when your affiliate account expires or is terminated. To find out when your affiliate account expires, contact your approver.
