Decarbonization

UMB utilizes practices including lighting replacements and controls as well as HVAC setbacks to reduce the amount of energy required to operate its buildings. Reduction strategies are identified and implemented on an ongoing basis. The more energy we reduce, the less we have to decarbonize. Since 2018, we’ve reduced our Energy Use Intensity (energy used per square foot) by 12.69%.

Deferred maintenance projects include structural and envelope repairs (including roofs and windows), as well as mechanical and electrical systems upgrades. Major renovations include replacing air handling units, heat exchangers, and other mechanical equipment. These projects may also include adding variable frequency drives and variable refrigerant flow systems to provide reductions in energy use. UMB is committed to helping our existing buildings achieve higher energy efficiency.

UMB is undertaking major campus electrical distribution system upgrades to provide reliability and increased capacity as we transition away from fossil-fuel systems. UMB completed a study in 2024 to identify options for electrifying the campus heating load which currently utilizes district steam. The study’s next phase will provide detailed phasing plans for electrifying our large campus buildings. Smaller buildings are converted to all-electric using electric boilers and other equipment where applicable. The University purchases renewable energy certificates (RECs) each year to cover 100% of its electricity usage.

UMB is updating its design standards and specifications to ensure that newly constructed buildings make use of renewable energy and new technology to use as little carbon as possible in their operations. The new School of Social Work building, currently under construction, is expected to achieve LEED Platinum and LEED operational net-zero energy status.
