Important Information

• Full-time faculty (any level) at any UMB school may apply. Preference is given to applications building on established relationships at international sites.
• Adjunct faculty are not eligible to apply for PGIF funds.

Limited funds are awarded via a competitive process. The most competitive applications will support one or more of the following PGIF program goals:

• A new or enhanced global research or education program that will continue beyond the initial seed funding;
• A program that engages faculty, students, and staff from multiple schools, or, at a minimum, multiple units within a single school;
• A collaboration taking place at one of UMB’s established partner sites or building on an established relationship to encourage new engagements and activities with existing expertise and on-the-ground support;
• Creation of a model for global education, service, or research that can be replicated by other departments or schools at UMB and beyond, by other universities or organizations;
• An initiative that supports bi-directional collaboration with a focus on shared and equitable opportunities for research, teaching, and mentorship.

The most competitive applications will include one or more of the following outcomes:

• Development and submission of a collaborative proposal for external funding;
• Development and submission of a collaborative scholarly publication;
• Create new course or degree programs with an international partner (can be virtual);
• An innovation in curriculum or curriculum design;
• Increased engagement at international sites where UMB already has academic partnerships and collaborative activities

Multi-year applications are not being accepted in 2025.

For previous grant awardees who hope to expand their work even further, you might possibly be allowed to apply for PGIF funding again. Please email globaltimore@umaryland.edu.

Funded projects typically involve partners that are outside of the United States to enhance UMB’s global engagement and reach. If your project does not take place at an international site, but aligns with some of the funding priorities and is globally focused, the review committee would look closely at your project’s connection to larger global phenomena.

For 2025, one-time funding up to $30,000 is available to launch or grow research, education, or service projects that have a global focus. Normal UMB procedures for use of funds apply.

Funds may be used toward:

• Research and teaching assistants, postdoctoral fellows, and student workers
• External (non-UMB) consultants
• Travel expenses, such as lodging, airfare, per diem, and transportation, not to exceed $5,000 per traveler
• Marketing supplies
• Contracted services abroad
• Equitable compensation for collaborators
• Other program-related or curriculum-related expenses (i.e., space reservation, cultural excursions, catering)

Funds may not be used to support:

• The purchase of alcohol
• UMB faculty or staff salaries or course buy-out
• Capital equipment
• Participation in individual degree programs

CGE also provides funding through Global Learning Grants.

Twice a year, awardees will be required to make reports on budget expenditures and progress.

Departmental Support

All applicants must have the support of their department and school. In the case of programs that will take place at an international UMB site, the application must have the support of the appropriate site director or his/her designee. CGE will transfer the award amount to the awardee's department and logistical details of the project will be handled by the awardee and the awardee's department.

International/Non-UMB Partners

Support letters from international/non-UMB partners are not required but are highly regarded in the application process.

The International Operations team at UMB is available to assist you in considering the logistical, financial, security, and other operational aspects of your proposed project. Early consultation with IO’s specialists in risk management, safety and security, IT, finance, and other functions can help you develop a feasible project design and avoid or prepare for the complexities of international project activity.

Applicants are encouraged to reach out to the IO team at globalhub@umaryland.edu for consultation on their project ideas and plans before submission.
