In its inaugural year, the President's Global Impact Fund is providing $250,000 in support for 11 projects which aim to develop cross-campus and international collaborations. Due to COVID-19, many of the projects are making adjustments to their plans across the globe.

The Center for International Health, Education and Biosecurity (Ciheb) at the UM School of Medicine's Institute of Human Virology was awarded $4 million from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support COVID-19 response activities in Botswana, Nigeria, Malawi, and Mozambique.

Dr. Robert Gallo, Director of the Maryland School of Medicine's Institute of Human Virology, was recently featured on BBC World News with Matthew Amroliwala during a "Coronavirus Explained" segment, where he discussed the potential an oral polio vaccine could have on COVID-19.

Nancy Bolan, Ph.D., MPH, FNP, CNM, Assistant Professor and Director, Office of Global Health at the School of Nursing, has joined the Consortium of Universities for Global Health's Competency Sub-Committee.

The Writing Center has started online Writing Accountability Groups. This is a structured opportunity for anyone at UMB to put aside time to write with the support of colleagues.

To bring together our global UMB family during the COVID-19 crisis, we welcomes our international community to share written reflections (even a single sentence) and photos that reflect how the pandemic is affecting them.

Nadia Sam-Agudu, MD, Institute for Human Virology at University of Maryland School of Medicine, co-authored "Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine for the Prevention or Treatment of Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in Africa: Caution for Inappropriate Off-Label Use in Healthcare Settings."

Toni San Miguel has been awarded a 2020 Benjamin H. Kean Travel Fellowship in Tropical Medicine from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
