The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package option to eligible employees. 

Health benefit plans are available through the State of Maryland Employee Benefits Division.

Effective Dates of Coverage:

Effective Dates of CoverageCoverage will begin on the first of the month following the start date of a new hire or the “Qualifying Event” date (such as marriage, loss of coverage, divorce, etc.). Effective dates for newborns will be adjusted to the actual date of birth. Employee will be billed by the state of Maryland back to their effective date of coverage.

Termination Dates of Coverage: Coverage will terminate on the last day of the month in which an employee separates from employment. If the employee has not had sufficient deductions through the end of the month in which they were covered, the state of Maryland will bill employees who separate employment.

    Plans include a traditional defined benefit plan (pension), a defined contribution retirement plan (for exempt staff and faculty only), voluntary supplemental retirement plans, and pre-retirement planning.

  • SPS Workday

    A cloud-based platform that UMB now uses to manage health benefits enrollment and elections for its faculty and staff

  • Tuition Remission

    Tuition remission is a program that provides employees with an opportunity to take classes at a University System of Maryland institution with waived tuition.

  • UMB Child Care Grant

    The Child Care Grant Program is available to assist working parents at UMB. The taxable, need-based grant will help eligible employees pay for qualifying, work-related child care.
