Headcount History by School, 2005-2009
Total Fall 2009 headcount enrollment is 6,382, an increase of 4% from Fall 2008. All Schools experienced an increase in enrollment size, with the largest percent increase found in Law. Medicine had the smallest percent increase.

FTES History by School, 2005-2009
Total Fall 2009 FTES enrollment is 6,077, an overall increase of 7% from Fall 2008. The FTES for all schools increased with Pharmacy and Nursing experiencing the largest and smallest percent increase, respectively. The transition to a credit based status determination method for Graduate School programs contributed to the FTES increases for the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Headcount Change by Degree
Enrollment growth for Fall 2009 is concentrated in the Master’s degree programs. The Professional Practice Doctorate and Certificate programs also added to the total growth while the Bachelor’s and Research & Scholarship Doctorate degree programs fell slightly in size compared to Fall 2008. The largest changes from last year are found in the Public Health MPH program, which doubled in size, and the Nursing MS program, which grew by 100 students. The Physical Therapy DScPT and Transitional DPT programs are no longer admitting new students.

Projected vs. Actual Headcount by Degree
Fall 2009 enrollment total is 2% larger than projected. While many programs were close to the projections, some had significant deviations. The Nursing MS and Law - Day JD programs enrolled the most number of students over their projected enrollments. Nursing PhD and Pharmacy PhD had the largest disparity among the programs that failed to reach their projected enrollment.

FTES Change by Degree
Full-Time Equivalent Student (FTES) change by degree generally parallels change in headcount enrollment. The Research & Scholarship Doctorate programs have the largest change in FTES due to a transition to a credit based status determination in the Graduate School. The Grand Total FTES for all programs increased 7% from 2008 Fall FTES.

Headcount by Gender
Women comprise 73% of the total enrollment, dominating all programs except for Law – Evening JD and Dental DDS where men account for 53% and 51% of enrollment, respectively. The Law LLM and Dental PhD programs are split equally.

Headcount by Attendance Status
Full-time students account for 77% of headcount enrollment for Fall 2009. Programs that have more than 50 percent part-time students include the Dental MS, Medicine MS, Public Health MPH, Social Work PhD, Physical Therapy DScPT, and Nursing MS, PhD, and DNP programs. The Doctor of Science of Physical Therapy (DScPT) is a part-time program.

African American students account for 17% of total enrollment for Fall 2009 while 57% of the students are Caucasian. Minority headcount enrollment for the campus is 35% of the total. Foreign students comprise only 4% of the total enrollment.

Maryland residents account for 75% of the total enrollment for Fall 2009. The undergraduate programs have the highest percent with 91% in-state residents. The Research & Scholarship Doctorate programs have the lowest at 36%.

Overall, 97% of students are seeking degrees. Most non-degree students are concentrated in the Master’s programs in Medicine, Nursing and Public Health.

Headcount by Class and Type
Of the “year assigned” programs, the percentages among classes appear to be more different within the Bachelor’s degree programs than for the other degree levels. Approximately 24% of new Nursing BSN students and 19% of new Social Work MSW students entered their respective program in Second Year standing. The entering class of Law – Evening JD is significantly larger than in previous years. There are also 41 first year PharmD students enrolled at the Universities at Shady Grove.

Graduate School Enrollment by Program
The Graduate School enrolls students in 9 Master’s and 25 Research & Scholarship Doctorate programs. Enrollment in Master’s degree programs has continued to rise, increasing by 55 students from Fall 2008 to Fall 2009. Non-Degree Graduate programs also increased enrollment this year by 41 students. Enrollment in Research & Scholarship Doctoral degree programs declined by 3 students. The gender and race of Graduate School students are depicted in Table 11b and Table 11c, respectively.

Professional Practice Students by Class and Gender
Women appear to be approaching an equal or greater percentage of the enrollment in the lower classes of the Dental DDS program, a historically male dominated program. However, the ratio of enrollment for males is greater for the First Year class than other year classes for most of the other Professional Practice programs.

Nearly 75% of students resided in Maryland at the time of application. Most resided in the Baltimore Region, followed by the Washington Region. Every Maryland County is represented. For a pictorial view, see Enrollment by Maryland County Map.

The University enrolled students from every state except Iowa, Montana, Nevada, and Wyoming. Outside of Maryland, the top five states represented are Pennsylvania, Virginia, California, New York, and Florida.

International students comprise 4% of overall enrollment. The programs that enroll the most International students are Nursing BSN, Medicine PhD, Pharmacy PhD, and Pharmacy – Entry Level PharmD.
