In February 2025, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching announced updates to Research Activity Designations within the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The University of Maryland, Baltimore was one of 187 institutions designated Research 1: Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production.
Three other Maryland institutions were also designated as Research 1: Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production:
- The Johns Hopkins University
- University of Maryland Baltimore County
- University of Maryland, College Park
Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland was designated as Research 2: High Research Spending and Doctorate Production.
