UMB leadership feels strongly that our West Baltimore neighbors, as well as stakeholders throughout Baltimore City, should feel at home on the UMB campus. Equally as important, our faculty, staff, and students should be comfortable engaging in activities in our surrounding community in support of K-12 schools, local merchants, nonprofit organizations, faith-based institutions, and beyond.

To this end, the Office of Community Engagement creates opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to engage with our broader West Baltimore community in the spirit of being a good neighbor and to support West Baltimore in addressing some of its most pressing needs. Examples of this interaction are detailed in the stories below.

On March 12, 2019, a group of Franklin Square Elementary Middle School students was invited to visit the Francis King Carey School of Law at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

The students acted as jurors in a fairy tale mock trial, Belle vs. Gaston. The students learned a lot about what it takes to be a lawyer and got to the chance to talk to law school students about higher education and their career paths.
