This information is intended for host departments at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) that are interested in inviting or currently working with J-1 exchange visitors.
The UMB Exchange Visitor Program allows for nonclinical instruction, research, and educational exchange. As a J-1 Program sponsor, UMB is obligated to comply with U.S. Department of State procedures and regulations. The J-1 program is divided into categories that correspond to the purpose of the visit and the proposed activities. J-1 sponsorship cannot be used for individuals in staff or tenured faculty positions at UMB.
All scholars and student interns must meet the English language proficiency standards and funding requirements.
- Funding may be from UMB and/or from a scholar’s home institution, government, etc. In some cases, personal funding may be acceptable.
- Any J-1 scholar who will NOT be on UMB payroll must complete the Visiting Scientist/Scholar Agreement and submit it to the Office of Research and Development (ORD) for approval.
UMB does not have authorization to sponsor those who will be involved in direct patient care. Clinical fellowships and residency programs are not within UMB’s scope of J-1 sponsorship.
UMB also sponsors J-1 visas for students who are admitted to UMB programs of study. For more information, see J-1 Students.
