Dear UMB Community:

During the past year, the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) hired 30 additional security officers, enhanced our police and security deployments, and increased our foot patrols for extra visibility. Crime at UMB has decreased by 25 percent since this time last year.

I am proud of our department’s progress, but there is still much to be done. This monthly newsletter will provide transparency and insight into our department’s initiatives, crime on campus, and updates from our public safety partners. Safety Tip of the Month

Walking across campus can seem like a great time to catch up on emails, listen to music, or return phone calls. However, using your phone and/or headphones can be distracting and create an easy opportunity for a thief. Put away your phone and headphones while outside. Call for a Safe Walk on campus 24/7 (410-706-6882) or request a Safe Ride through the Mobile UMB app (learn how here).

Serving Our Community

Pop-Up Pantry

Last month, the UMBPD Community Outreach and Support Team (COAST) joined the UMB Intercultural Center to distribute 30-pound boxes of nonperishable food to students, employees, and community members experiencing food insecurity. Learn more.

Implicit Bias and Pro-LGBTQ+ Training

UMBPD has partnered with UMB community members to create a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work group. All UMBPD employees have taken Pro-LGBTQ+ Policing Training and Implicit Bias Training, provided by the Intercultural Center’s Gregory A. Brightbill, MBA, MEd, and Courtney J. Jones Carney, MBA. While we are proud of this progress, we acknowledge that there is still so much to learn. As a progressive, community-oriented police department, UMBPD is committed to continued learning and improvement in the years ahead.

Supervisor Leadership Institute

Congratulations to Sergeants Ronald Nicholson, Thaddeus Davis, and Andrew Degele, who completed the FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute. The course teaches mentoring, risk management, personality diagnostics, and more for first-line supervisors.

Increased Visibility at UMB

Keep an eye out for our security officers in red shirts and yellow vests during high-traffic commute times. Our security officers are the eyes and ears of UMBPD and are here to keep you safe. Environmental Health and Safety

Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Do you know emergency evacuation procedures at UMB? If you see smoke or fire, pull the fire alarm and evacuate using the nearest marked exit. Stay outside until you get the all-clear. Learn more.

Wet Lab Safety

Wet laboratories contain a variety of hazardous, highly toxic, corrosive, flammable, and explosive chemicals. While safety practices focus on the accidental release of chemicals, security practices also should focus on preventing any intentional release.

Maintain an accurate inventory of hazardous materials.
Establish specific purchasing policies; avoid ordering more hazardous materials than you need.
Control access to materials; keep materials secure when not in use; report thefts or losses immediately.
