Dear UMB Community:

In a few short weeks, we will set our clocks back and the days will get shorter. Many of our students and employees will be coming to work and going home when it’s already dark outside. As the days get shorter, I want to remind you to please remain vigilant.

If you ever need help, the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department (UMBPD) is available 24/7. Security officers in red shirts and reflective vests can be found patrolling on foot, on UMBPD electric vehicles, and in many UMB buildings. Our police officers wear black uniforms and vests and can be found in UMBPD patrol cars and on foot. Our police communications operators are a phone call away at 410-706-6882. Remember, in an emergency, always call 911.

Public Safety Update

Safety Tip of the Month: Bicycle Safety

Riding your bicycle is a sustainable and healthy way to commute to UMB. Stay safe by wearing a helmet and having lights and/or reflectors on your bike for increased visibility. When you arrive on campus, lock your bicycle on a rack or use a bike parking facility.

The Office of Sustainability is seeking feedback from students and employees who use their bicycle to commute to and from campus. Feedback will help make our campus more bicycle-friendly. The survey takes no more than five minutes to complete. As a thank you, 15 randomly selected participants will receive a UMB Sustainability-branded bicycle light! Take the survey now .

Kudos for Our Cops (recognizing excellent customer service in our community)

A community member praised UMBPD for having “wonderful officers” who supported her for more than a year of court hearings. She says PFC Scottie Washington, Cpl. Jim Brown, and Cpl. Shantell Brown encouraged her to pursue the case and transported her to court 13 times! “I just want to thank them so much. They were wonderful.”

Education and Training Update

Sgt. Thaddeus Baker received an Instructor of the Year award at the Maryland Police and Training Commission's 22nd Annual Instructors' Awards and Training Conference. Congratulations, Sergeant Baker!

UMBPD’s Education and Training division has provided Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training to more than 300 UMB students and employees since June. Schedule your training now .

Occupant Emergency Plans Coming Soon!

OEM is developing occupant emergency plans for every University building. These plans provide building-specific details and directions related to evacuation procedures, lifesaving resources, and much more. Keep an eye out for more information coming soon!

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)

October Is National Biosafety and Biosecurity Month!

This is a great opportunity to review your research program to make sure all proper precautions are in place to keep workers safe and agents secure. All research involving recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules, infectious agents, and human materials should be submitted to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
