Mission
The UMB Writing Center supports student writers and faculty teaching with writing at UMB in navigating strategic approaches to writing practices in health sciences and human services disciplines.
Our Approach to Consultations
At the UMB Writing Center, peer writing consultants meet with UMB student writers both online and in person to discuss strategies for writing. Administrative staff is also available to consult with faculty on questions around writing assessment and writing pedagogy.
We know that writing is way more than words on the page or the arrangement of grammatical units. As a result, we engage with writers and faculty with empathy and respect to foster a supportive and non-discriminatory environment.
We also know that nobody ever writes up a “perfect” draft. The act of writing is about continuously engaging various strategies to communicate and often addressing multiple audiences for specific purposes in particular situations. Writing therefore involves negotiating meaning, genres, and discipline-specific pratices and is always evolving.
Your experiences and choices as writers matter in our Center. We see you as accomplished, experienced colleagues whose varied writing practices and professional and scholarly expertise guide our service. We look forward to learning and writing with you.
